Social security provides two
Social security provides two types of benefits to disabled children. First, they provide social security disability benefits, and second they provide SSI income benefits if families have little resources. Child SSI benefits are paid to a disabled child under the age of 18 if the disability is considered severe enough to create significant limitations. The benefits continue until a child is 18, at which time the child’s case is reevaluated under the adult definition of disability to determine if benefits will continue. Your income and resources must also be below a certain level in order to be eligible for child ssi benefits. You can apply for disability benefits online by filling out a Child Disability Report, or can meet with a social security counselor who can help determine your childrens SSI eligibility benefits and help you apply. A qualified social security attorney may also be able to help guide you in the process.
