Does Social Security Income decrease by Earning Other Income?

Question: I am receiving SSI security benefits. Will my benefits be affected if I earn extra money from work?

Response: SSI payments are based on how much income you have. So, when your other income increases, your social security disability income will decrease. When your only other income (other than SSI) is money earned from your job, the first $85 of your monthly earnings are not counted. Subsequently, 50 cents of every dollar earned after the $85 is deducted from your social security disability income. For example, if you earn $900 per month, $815 is counted. $407.50 will be deducted from your social security disability income.
