Unsuccessful Work Attempt

An unsuccessful Work Attempt (UWA) is an effort by a disabled individual to do substantial work that either stopped or produced earnings below the Substantial Gainful Activity SGA level within 6 months due to the individual's disabling condition or due to an elimination of the special services or assistance that the individual needed in order to perform his work.

  • For Supplemental Security Insurance recipients, an unsuccessful work attempt, a UWA, has no affect on the SSI Cash Benefit Amount.
  • For Social Security Disability Insurance recipients, unsuccessful work attempt, UWA criteria do apply in determining whether you should receive a payment for a particular month during the first 36 months of your Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE).
