Ssi Security

Supplementary Security Income (SSI) was formed to assist the elderly over the age of 65 who have little or no income, are bind or disabled and need assistance for basic needs. The program is managed by the Social Security Administration, but is financed separately through the US Treasury. The overall goal of SSI is to provide security to these at-risk senior citizens. The SSI program furthers this goal by allowing those receiving SSI benefits to also receive additional benefits from other government programs such as social services, food stamps, Medicaid and even Social Security. SSI is also available for children who suffer from the same medical conditions. SSI payments are the same across the nation, although some states add on to the amounts given out. SSI eligibility is also calculated differently than regular Social Security disability, and a person's past income is not as highly weighted in determining benefits. To receive SSI security, a person must be able to prove they meet the disability and low-income requirements.
