Social Security Master Death File

The Social Security Administration (SSA) Death Master File (DMF), often erroneously called the Social Security master death file, is comprised of more than sixty-five million records of deceased individuals who received SSA payments during their lifetime. The DMF includes data such as the deceased's name, social security number, birth date, death date, state, country, and last known zip code. Not every deceased person is included in the DMF, which is why the SSA does not verify the accuracy of its files. Therefore, the fact that a person is not included in these files is not to be considered absolute proof that this person is still living. If you must accurately identify an individual as deceased, contact a reputable social security attorney. While the DMF is not available for viewing online through the SSA, a subscription-based service offered by the United States Departments of Commerce's National Technical Information Service (NTIS) makes online queries available.

Fast Facts

  • Due to the Freedom of Information Act, the SSA is obligated to disclose data contained in the DMF to anyone member of the public who wishes to view it
  • The DMF is one source of information used by credit reporting agencies, banks and mortgage companies to prevent that fraud that can occur when an individual applies for credit using the social security number of a deceased individual
