Social Security Disability Payments

Social security disability payments are provided by two of the largest federal programs: The Social Security program and the Supplemental Security Income Disability program. Both agencies are designed specifically to assist individuals with disabilities, and both programs are administered by the Social Security Administration. Only individuals with a disability who meet specific medical criteria can qualify for disability benefits under either SSD (Social Security Disability Insurance) or SSI (Supplemental Security Income). If you have worked long enough to qualify and have paid Social Security taxes during that time, you may qualify for SSD benefits. If you do not meet the work requirements but have a financial need, you may qualify for SSI. The Social Security Administration uses a Benefits Eligibility Screening Tool to determine which program is best for you, based on your needs and your ability to meet the requirements of the program. However, some people prefer to contact an experienced disability attorney to fully protect their rights.
