Social Security Disability Consultative Medical Exam

Social Security Disability Consultative Medical Exams or "CE"s are usually requested by a disability examiner with the Disability Determination Services. The claimant is requested to have an examination of his disability claim by a physician designated by the DDS. These exams are paid for by DDS and not by the person being examined. Some doctors may fail to give the claimant the same level of courtesy that they would generally extend to one of their regular patients and often does not have the claimant's best interests in mind. Many physicians do not give proper credence to a patient's complaints of pain, likely because pain is a subjective matter rather than a measurable and objective one.

Fast Facts

  • Doctors who perform CE examinations are not there to assist or help the claimant in any fashion. They are simply performing a paid service for DDS.
  • Many of the doctors who perform CE's for the Social Security Administration dislike performing them and do them for the money only because they are unable to get a better paying job.
