Social Security Death Index

The social security administration has kept active records of most people who have died in the US that had a social security number and also had their deaths reported to the social security administration. These records became more accurate after 1973, and since than, upwards of 96% of all deaths from people over the age of 65 are available in the social security death index. As this is a government record, all the information contained in the index is free online for people to browse thanks to the Freedom of Information Act. Currently, the index lists of 83 million deceased people, and was last updated on January 28th of 2009. The index stores valuable information on each person, including his or her birth date, death date, and social security number, last place of residence and state or territory where the social number was issued. Additionally, people can use an advanced search to access the deceased's original social security application, which contains even more information that is personal.
