Insured Status

If a claimant worked and earned enough Social Security credits to be eligible for retirement or disability benefits or enable his dependants to be eligible for benefits due to his retirement, disability or death, he will have reached insured status. The credits are based on the amount of earnings. Social Security will use the work history to determine eligibility for retirement or disability beneifits or survivor benefits after the worker's death.

Fast Facts

  • A worker will receive one credit for each $1,090 of earnings or up to a maximum of four credits per year. Most people need 10 years of work (40 credits) to qualify for benefits.
  • Credits earned will remain on the workers record even he changes his job or has no earning for a while that year.
