Impairment-Related Work Expenses

Social Security can deduct the out-of-pocket costs of disability, or impairment related work expenses from the amount they use to figure the worker's earnings used to figure his Supplemental Security Insurance benefit. The social security does not reduce the SSI benefit as much because they do not count all of the worker's earnings. If the claimant works, he may be able to deduct expenses such as medical service charges, doctor visits to prepare him for work, modifications to the home, purchase of a van to allow you to access work and other non reimbursed expenses related to the disability.

Fast Facts

  • The cost of items used in daily living as well as work will usually be deducted from the earnings.
  • A person who is disabled may also use other SSI work incentives such as Plans to Achieve Self Support.
