Full Retirement Age

The age at which a worker may receive full retirement benefits is called the full retirement age. Full retirement age, also called normal retirement age, determines when you can receive your full retirement benefit. If a worker wants to begin to receive retirement benefits earlier, his benefit will be a reduced percentage of the amount he would have received if he had waited to his full retirement age to begin receiving benefits.

Fast Facts

  • A worker will receive an increased benefit by delaying receiving benefits until after he has reached his full retirement age.
  • People receiving disability benefits will experience no change when they reach their full retirement age. The disability benefits will change to retirement benefits automatically without any action by the worker.
