Family Benefits

When a disabled wage earner starts receiving disability benefits his family may also be entitled to receive benefits. His spouse, divorces spouse, children, disabled children and even his parents may be eligible to receive benefit of up to fifty per cent of his disability rate. There is a limit on the amount of benefits that can be paid to a family. The total depends on the number of family members who qualify for benefits. If the total benefits payable to the family is greater than the limit all members' benefits will be reduced but the wage-earner's benefits will not be similarly reduced.

Fast Facts

  • An adult caretaker may be eligible for benefits under the disabled child's entitlement to benefits.
  • If you are divorced, your ex-spouse may be entitled to benefits on your wage earning record even if you remarry.
