Disability Quality Branch, Or Dqb

When a decision on a Social Security disability or SSI disability claim has been made, initial or on reconsideration, that case can be pulled and sent to the disability quality branch. This quality review is random and has no connection with the examiner or the decision result. However, many disability denials are overtuned and become approvals in the DQB. This can also slow up the whole process of applying for benefits by months or more. In theory, the Disability Quality Branch is supposed to review the decision made by the disability examiner and determine whether all rules and evidence were applied and considered appropriately. Many people in the SSDI and SSI field believe that the Branch overturns more approvals than denials.

Fast Facts

  • The regional review units (Disability Quality Branch or DQB) have the power to over-turn state disability decisions and charge the state agencies with errors.
  • Many people believe the DQB offers politically motivated review of State disability determinations.
