Disability Benefits

Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs offer the largest federal programs providing assistance to disabled persons. Individuals with a disability that meet certain medical criteria may be eligible to receive benefits. Disability benefits are available to people who are unable to work because of a medical condition that is expected to last at least one year or result in death. The federal law requires a very strict application of the definition of disability to all applications for benefits from disabled claimants.

Fast Facts

  • Some federal programs provide benefits to partially disabled persons but Social Security does not.
