Deeming

"Deeming" refers to deeming parental income and resources in a supplemental security income situation. Social Security will consider some parental income and resources as available to the child. These resources and income sources may affect whether or not the child get SSI benefits and how much benefits the child may be entitled to receive. The process of determining how much income and resources Social Security will use in its determination is called "Deeming" and applies to the parent's income.

  • A step parent's income and resources count as long as the natural parent or adoptive parent is living in the home.
  • For all income and resources used in the "deeming" process only a portion of that income is deemed available to the child.
