Benefits

Social Security pays monthly benefits in five major categories. Those five general categories of benefits include the following:ᅠ retirement benefits, disability benefits, family (dependents) benefits, survivor benefits and Medicare benefits. The retirement, family (dependents), survivor and disability programs pay monthly cash benefits, and Medicare provides for any necessary medical coverage.

Fast Facts

  • Benefits due a child or spouse are not affected by a wage earners failure to file his annual report of earnings on time. Their benefits may be reduced if the wage earner loses his right to benefits because of excess earnings.
  • If a claimant is age 65 or older and is entitled to monthly benefits under Social Security or railroad retirement, he is also then automatically entitled to hospital insurance and medical insurance. No additional or separate application is needed to receive those benefits.
