Applying For Ssi

If you are interested in applying for social security benefits, the Social Security Administration (SSA) offers several convenient methods, including by phone, via the Internet and visiting an SSA office in person. Before applying, however, be sure you understand which type of benefits you are applying for; either supplemental security income (SSI), disability (SSD), or retirement benefits. In some cases, you may apply for both retirement benefits and SSI or SSD. SSD benefits are payable to individuals with a Work History and tax record that meets the eligibility requirements for receiving benefits through the program. SSI is a program designed to meet the needs of individuals who are blind, elderly, or otherwise disabled, as proven under a strict set of criteria. Individuals approved for SSI must also meet specific low income/low resource requirements. If you are not sure which program you may be eligible for, seek the assistance of a qualified social security attorney.
