Application For Benefits

A claimant may file application requesting multiple types of social security benefits. The application must clearly request one or more types of benefits. For example, an application may request simultaneously request hospital insurance protection, monthly benefits and social security earnings benefits. The scope of the application for benefits may be expended or restricted as long as the claimant includes the appropriate additional information on the application to allow social security to make a decision on the requests. There are a few exceptions to that rule. For example, if a claimant is eligible for both reduced retirement insurance benefits and reduced spouse's insurance benefits beginning with the same month, he cannot restrict his application to just one of these types of benefits. By filing for either benefit, he is deemed by law to have filed for both types of benefits.

Fast Facts

  • If a claimant files an application for multiple benefits incorrectly the Social Security will likely notice the claimant of the inadequate application filed and request the filing of an additional application to successfully claim the benefit.
  • If a claimant dies before filing an application for social security benefits the application is then filed by his estate or a person acting on his behalf within six months after notice that an application filing is required to receive benefits.
