And Social Security Disability

The Social Security administration provides benefits for those over 65 with disabilities through its regular disabilities program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The regular disability program is based on a person's work history from the 10 years prior to their disability and an eligibility formula that requires a certain amount of credits based off a worker's earnings. The worker must be unable to work due to a disability that is diagnosed to last a year or more or result in death. The SSI is for people already receiving Social Security that have low income or few resources. These people have a different set of qualifications in regard to their work history, but have the same requirements in terms of the disability diagnosis. They also may receive additional government funding such as Medicaid and food stamps and social security disability at the same time.

Fast Facts

  • Social Security Disability is funded exclusively by FICA taxes, while SSI is funded by general income taxes
  • Around 7.3 million people receive SSI benefits
