Ame

AME is the social security abbreviation for "average monthly earnings." The AME is the amount of money in dollars that is used to determine how much your benefit from Social Security would be if you are at least age sixty two or became disabled or died before 1978. To receive disability benefits, a claimant must have worked enough years to have built up work credits. AME is established by the total amount a claimant earns during a period of time referred to as the computation of years which is then divided by how many months were contained in the period of time. This calculation determines if a claimant has enough work credits to draw disability benefits.
