Aime

AIME is an abbreviation used by Social Security meaning Average Indexed Monthly Earnings. This is the dollar amount used to calculate a claimant's benefits if they are at minimum sixty two years old or became disabled or died after 1978. The AIME amount in determined by adjusting past earnings using an "average wage index" which functions to adjust past earnings values in relation to current earnings for the reason that the past wages were worth more at the time they were earned and the adjustment allows for an accurate reflections of the total wages earned.

  • The computation years are those years, selected from the base years, that you earned the most income. The total earnings in the computation years are added together and divided by the number of months in those years to determine the AIME or the AME.
  • To quickly calculate an AIME or an AME, divide the total earnings in the computation years by the number of months in those years and it the result is not an exact multiple of one dollar, round down to the next lowest dollar.
